Kineret - Anakinra

The Food and Drug Administration recently approved Kineret, a rheumatoid arthritis drug manufactured by Amgen. In an earlier review conducted by an FDA Advisory Panel, some panel members expressed concern about Kineret's side effects and questionable efficacy.
Kineret treats rheumatoid arthritis by reducing interleukin-1, a protein associated with bone and muscle deterioration. Amgen presented evidence that Kineret was effective in 10% to 20% of arthritis patients. In addition, there is a small risk of developing infections while taking the medication.
